Confederations Cup
The FIFA Confederations Cup was first held in Saudi Arabia in 1992 and was called the King Fahd Cup. In 1997 FIFA upgraded its status to an official tournament and renamed it the FIFA Confederations Cup. Since 2005 on its been held every four years. The Confederations Cup is held one year prior to the FIFA World Cup at the country that will host the FIFA World Cup the following year making the Confederations Cup a dress rehearsal for the FIFA World Cup host nations as well as the participating teams.
The Confederations Cup is played by the winners of each of the six FIFA confederation championships; AFC Asian Cup, CAF African Cup of Nations, CONCACAF Gold Cup, CONMEBOL Copa America, OFC Nations Cup, Euro 2008, along with the FIFA World Cup champion, and the host country, bringing the number of teams up to eight. If the FIFA World Cup champion is also winner of its confederation championship then the runnerup champion takes its place to ensure eight teams for the Confederations Cup tournament.
