UEFA Cup History, Qualification and Format
The UEFA Cup started in the 1971 by The Union of European Football Associations, UEFA. It was born out of the Inter-Cities Fair Cup. Tottenham Hotspur FC was the winner of the first UEFA Cup. Qualification for the UEFA Cup is based on UEFA coefficients with more places offered to the most successful nations. It's open to the runners-up football teams in the top leagues in Europe, the winners of the National Cup, the winners of the League Cup in certain countries, three winners of the UEFA Intertoto Cup, and three clubs from UEFA's Fair Play League. FA Cup winners also qualify by right for the first round of the UEFA Cup. If the winners also qualify for the UEFA Champions League by merit of league position, the losing finalist qualifies for the UEFA Cup in their place. If both finalists qualify for the Champions League, an extra UEFA Cup place is given on the basis of Premier League position. Additionally, the eight third place clubs at the end of the UEFA Champions League group stage drop into the UEFA Cup. The current competition format is as follows: There are two qualifying rounds and the losers in the third qualifying round of the Champions League are placed in the first round proper of the tournament. After the first round proper forty enter a group phase with the clubs being drawn into eight groups of five each. The UEFA Cup group phase is played in a single round robin format with each club playing two home and two away games. The top three teams in each group advance where they are joined by the eight third place teams in the Champions League group phase. From this point knockout play resumes with two legged ties leading to the one off UEFA Cup Final.
